Today’s topic covers neck treatment, which is one of the major components of concussion rehab. When the body sustains an impact large enough to cause a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI), the neck is often affected similar to a whiplash injury. This creates a lot of muscular guarding, and patients’ posture changes after their concussion. ⁣

When neck muscles and joints are tight, they can cause neck pain, headaches, dizziness and fatigue. The joints between the vertebrae in our necks also play a part in proprioception, our ability to understand where we are in space. This can affect our balance and contribute to dizziness. ⁣

What does this mean for concussion rehab? Trained health care professionals such as physiotherapists can help by providing manual therapy to the restricted muscles and joints. Manual therapy, in conjunction with a tailored education and home exercise program, can help restore normal range of motion and reduce unwanted symptoms associated with concussion. ⁣
