New research in acupuncture therapy is ever expanding our knowledge and background to support acupuncture as a legitimate holistic therapy. Today, I am going to break down how acupuncture can help with menopausal symptoms.
Hot Flashes and Night Sweats
Vasomotor Symptoms including hot flashes and night sweats are among the most common symptoms experienced by menopausal women. Research reports a significant reduction in hot flashes and also found that “acupuncture improved menopause-related psychological, somatic, and urogenital symptoms, as well as overall quality of life.”
Depression and Anxiety
Many women experience depression or anxiety as well as other mood disorders when they are going through menopause. Studies with acupuncture have concluded that with acupuncture therapy “it is reasonable to use acupuncture as an adjunctive therapy for treating depression in postmenopausal women who have vasomotor symptoms.”
Sleep Disturbance and Insomnia
Evidence supports acupuncture to improve sleep quality and healthier sleeping rhythms. 75% reported improvements to sleep quality, as acupuncture releases a sense of relaxation that provides a calming effect.
Osteoporosis
Studies have shown that compared with pharmaceuticals, warm acupuncture improves Bone Mineral Density (BMD) of the femur and lumbar spine. It has also been shown to increase serum calcium and estradiol levels, reduce serum alkaline phosphatase and relieve pain.
Cognitive Decline and Alzeimer’s Disease
A meta-analysis from 2019 found that acupuncture therapy provided some benefits which included 13 studies with acupuncture and medication alone.
