Are you a tosser?
Turner?
Do you lie there staring at the ceiling wondering when your mind will finally clue in that you are in fact, very tired, and should really just sleep?
Missing out on sleep is one of the biggest threats to our health.
Personally, I’ve always considered myself to be a fairly good sleeper.
I never woke up at sleepovers as a kid, I get a standard 6-8 hours every night and quite frankly I can fall asleep on a dime and really just enjoy sleeping!
So I was really surprised to learn that I actually WAS NOT sleeping all that well.
How did I figure that out?
Although I considered myself a good sleeper I was still waking up in the middle of the night once or twice. Usually to use the bathroom or just to reposition myself. Totally normal stuff!
And I’m always on a quest to find ANYTHING that may augment my sleep experience. From meditation apps to fancy pillows to endlessly researching mattresses, I’m always interested in upping my sleep game! Not to mention sleep related questions are one of the most common ones I get from clients!
A few weeks ago, on my never-ending journey to find sleep utopia, I tried using a weighted blanket for the first time.
I wasn’t sure about them, not sure if I would like them, but I figured since there was a guarantee that I could return it if it wasn’t for me.
Welp- I’m utterly shocked to say it changed EVERYTHING!
For the first time in years I have started sleeping through the night.
I had NO IDEA that my sleep was so interrupted and that I WASN’T sleeping well until I started waking up SO much more rested after a night with the blanket!
So what is a weighted blanket?
A weighted blanket is just that, a blanket that is made with weight sewn into it, often in the form of sand or beads (the one I got is sand filled). They usually vary from 5lb (child) to up to about 35lbs (which would be for 2 people, typically in a King size)
What are the benefits of a weighted blanket?
Weighted Blankets were originally created to help people suffering from various sleep issues from sleep anxiety and restlessness along with a more diverse medical application for conditions such as , ADHD, OCD, Sensory Processing Disorder, Anxiety, Stress, and PTSD.
They can significantly reduce tossing and turning while you sleep as well as help you fall into a deeper sleep faster.
How do weighted blankets work?
Weighted blankets work by utilising Deep Touch Pressure Stimulation (DTPS). By having a consistent pressure applied to the skin, it activates deep touch receptors which then send neurological impulses to the brain that the environment is safe and secure. These are the same receptors that are stimulated when being hugged or stroked or even swaddling like we do for babies.
DTPS helps with falling asleep deeper and faster. The reason a blanket can help with this is because when the deep pressure receptors are stimulated they tell the body to reduce cortisol levels (stress hormone) while increasing both serotonin (“happy” hormone) and melatonin (“sleep” hormone). Even being under a weighted blanket for a short period of time can do all of this!
How much weight do you need?
Weighted blankets come in different sizes and weights. The ideal blanket weight will be between 7-12% of your body weight (or your combined body weight of you and your partner if you have a large one that is shared).
Heavier does not equal better. If a blanket is too heavy you may feel like you can’t move at all.
A good size for most adult individuals is either a 15 or 20 lbs single blanket and for most couples either a 25 or 30lb blanket. There are also children sizes (5lb) and sizes for teens (8 or 12lbs).
Are they hot?
Also a great question! It all depends on the cover! The one I have has a bamboo cover which is specifically for keeping you cool while you sleep. Although I’m normally a hot sleeper I’ve personally had no issue with it and sleep soundly and comfortably!
You can also get covers that are “warmer” with more a minky feel to them but since the covers are changeable you can modify it based on your preference or the season.
